Bottom line, whether you are, going to be, hanging on or growing old in your marriage the principles and challenges are real and relevant and apply across the board because its about relationships!
I have found already in this series that i am learning as much about me as i am about my spouse. There is no doubt that when you can open up about the truth of you it allows the relational margin to accept the truth about others that you are in relationship with.
Don't forget to Keep inviting your family and friends, this is a 6 week series and has lots of good stuff coming. It would get even heavier as it moved toward the grand finale: the brooding tune of Thursday evening’s meal, the somber sound of devastating loss that was that Friday afternoon, the silent and uncertain pause that was Saturday, the eternally resonating major chord of victory that was Sunday morning.

But before He got there, it appears that Jesus took a day off. Nothing is recorded about His whereabouts or activities on Wednesday. Perhaps He was making plans with a cryptic man who appeared to Peter and John carrying a water jug. Perhaps He was watching Judas wrestle with the demons that would prompt him to do his dastardly deed. Perhaps He spent the day praying and gathering His thoughts.

Regardless, it’s instructive that Jesus chose to do nothing with one of His last days that the biblical writers deemed noteworthy. Because here we see another patten in Jesus’ life: He observed a rhythm of work and rest. He plunged Himself headlong into ministry, working from sun up to sundown, healing, teaching, feeding and touching. And then He withdrew from the crowds, carving out time for rest and solitude. Then once more into the breach He charged, only to retreat again when He felt it was time for a little R&R.

You can’t really call the life He led “balanced.” It’s not like He had a Day-Timer or a Blackberry and scheduled every hour of His days: Let’s see, I spent an hour alone today, so that means I can spend an hour with people. He just seems to have felt it, like a rhythm.

There are some personality types who are particularly prone to working all the time. If there’s work to be done — one person who hasn’t heard the good news about Jesus, or someone in the hospital who hasn’t been visited — these people are on the go. They say things like, “I can rest when I’m with the Lord” or “I’d rather burn out than rust out.” Either way, you’re out, so I’m not sure why either is an acceptable option.

For those of us who are more likely to work, work, work, it’s important to see that Jesus, at this point, had only a few dozen hours left on this earth. And He chose to rest. He chose to do nothing of interest. He took a day off.

One of the reasons why taking a day off is so important is that it forces you to remember that everything isn’t dependent upon you. Like Jesus, you have a Father in heaven who is constantly at work. The assurance of this is what makes rest possible.

Jesus could have been uptight and fussy, gathering His disciples for late-night cram sessions all week long. But He knew that the Helper would come and do His work in His time. Jesus would do what He could and leave the rest up to His Father and the Holy Spirit.

Now if that’s the way Jesus lived, do you suppose you could try to get some rest this weekend?

The Me I Want To Be

We live in a world of constant improvement, it seems as if everything is version 2.0 or 3.1. We are always looking and asking for the newest and the improved when it comes to software or even laundry soap.
There is something deep down that loves... New, Improved or Improving...yes, even when it comes to us. So often we look to wardrobe or diets to answer that question for us on a personal level but rarely do we ever seek to improve our inner selves. This weekend at NewPointe we are kicking off a series called, The Me I Want To Be. It's going to be an incredible journey as we look into our deeper world and what God has to say about us, how he sees us... how we can see ourselves and what we have In Christ that will forever impact the trajectory of our lives!
In conjunction with this series is a 41 day fast that will take you to Easter.
Fasting is something we give up in order to press into God during the 41 days, for some it might be a meal a day and replace it with a time of prayer and for others it could be giving up some things else like TV or Internet. Either way it's all about saying no to something so you can say yes to God. Along with this fast is a daily web devotional that will guide you along this journey and you can find it at www.newpointe.org
This will be an incredible time as we all travel together towards becoming all that God has created us to be and all that we desire to become!

Whoop! Leadership has a relational component...think about it, the whole deal about leadership is leading someone...a person and it requires us to see deeper that just the task at hand and to be aware of what's going on with those we lead.
This is hard to do because we can get so wrapped up in the task that we lose the connection with the real reason we are doing all this and that is to help everyone on the team to navigate the step they are now currently taking.
Many who are new to serving wrestle with so much....New at the task...pressure to do it right....entering into a place where everyone else already knows each other and feels a little out of the loop. Trust me this is a difficult time for a new volunteer and we as leaders need to be aware of that and walk alongside every new volunteer even if it slows down the task.
We need to introduce, explain why, connect with and celebrate with every person who takes that scary risk of taking that step to join our teams!
We have an incredible team don't miss out on your chance to grow as a leader and it starts with growing your awareness.

Whoop! We exist to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Last year we had an empty chair in our essential class prior to the campus launch, simply to represent those who have yet to come to NewPointe. Now we come each week to an environment designed for people who are on their spiritual journey no matter where they are on that journey and still within a 10 mile radius of our campus lives thousands of people who have yet to be invited to a place that cares deeply for them. In 2010 we have an incredible opportunity to introduce people to a chair in a place that thinks about them and wants them to know they have a heavenly father that loves them deeply!
And for those who already have a seat here is a challenge for you....ready? Hey this year take a step away from that chair and join us on this mission to join God in what he is doing at NewPointe and impact a community in a way that will last for eternity!

Check this out...

I am a chair from buckheadchurch on Vimeo.

Making a Difference

Recently I watched the HBO Original Series, Band of Brothers. I was inspired by the bravery and sacrifice of the young men and women that knowingly or unknowingly impacted the course of history by simply doing their job. As I watched episode after episode, the interviews with the soldiers often pointed to two objectives…….do my job and stay alive.

Now through that whole time frame of WWII, the men had journeyed from being dropped into enemy territory in France to waiting for the war to end in Switzerland. I watched these guys continually adjust to conditions and challenges. There is no doubt that God was in the midst of all the chaos and that the courage the men of Easy Company and those of any person that is in combat or training to go into combat has to come from something beyond that which is human.

I was moved!

Then I thought of you.

I know it’s not combat, but there is something about sacrifice and impacting the course of eternity for a generation that’s incredibly compelling. Doing your job and working to keep your spiritual life together in the midst of life’s personal and public battles. Adjusting to conditions and challenges from within and from the outside world, knowing that God is in the midst of the chaos and having the courage to wait on him rather than reacting in your own way. Trusting him in ways beyond what you think that you can handle, taking it all one day at a time.

Bottom line….I believe that God is committed to the proposition that if he’s going to get the job done, he’s going to get the job done through you!

All in all I want you all to know how thankful and proud I am of you. I know that God is up to something Big in your life and I pray that you will continue find Him faithful as we serve together to claim victory over an enemy that seeks to kill and destroy!

You are Heroes!

Love you guys! Soon after John baptized Jesus people began to follow Jesus, soon after Jesus was baptizing and some of John's guys approached him to get the lowdown on what John thought about this new guy cutting in on his deal.

Johns reply was classic....I Am Not!

His focus was not on himself or his deal but on the Jesus and what he was about. John had an awareness of the magnitude of what God was up to. Even to the point of saying "He must increase and I must decrease". I must become smaller.

Isn't it totally counter intuitive to become smaller? Hey Jesus...Wouldn't be a good Idea to go into a partnership with both of us getting some glory...Like hey dude I set the table for you toss me a bone or something?!

But That wasn't John's response.....He said I must be small!

Now small is directly connected to your view of God and it requires a healthy perspective on who you are and who God is in your life. John gives us an incredible perspective on that with three simple words that would/could revolutionize our lives and ministries.....I Am Not!

It's so easy to try and control, to worry about outcomes and fret over numbers. It causes us to over work, over think, become jealous, worry about titles and who gets the credit and in all of it forget that God asks us to join Him in what he is doing and not the other way around.

We are growing and in the middle of it all our challenge to be the leader that God has called us to be is to embrace the larger calling of "Smallness"

Hey, no one said it would be easy! That is the fullest form of appreciation. It means that some one knows and understands what you trying to do and why your trying to do it. It's about noticing the effort and giving feedback that's specific and positive. I call this Thinking Big about Small Things! Every week there are people who step up and do the little things.....things that matter much in our ability to reach and impact our community. Like washing windows, cleaning toilets, vacuuming the carpets, being prepared for your part of the weekend, smiles, smells(the good kind)...anything that makes the experience for some one who shows up to be extraordinary. Because we serve an extraordinary God who is worthy of that kind of effort....just look at creation and you see the little things and that God was all about them....butterfly wings, snowflakes, fingerprints...it goes on and on. Hey this week lets pay attention to detail, let's notice those who are thinking big about small things and pump them up! It makes big impact!

Empty Your Cup!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YkVJ-WoXi9A/SvsfC9-ARqI/AAAAAAAAAaM/CmKpd20lI7M/s200/37353+Star+Wars+Yoda+Cup+%2424.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402946313815869090" />
As a leader I am always challenged by the concept of apprenticeship. I watch Star Wars and look at the Jedi way and it rocks. The young padawan goes everywhere the Jedi master goes and asks questions...."Master, why....

OK, back to reality, the truth is that apprenticeship is one of those things that can overwhelm us. The reason we feel that way is because we misunderstand what it is, so erase the star wars image from your mind and take a cosmic spin into a new way of apprentice thinking.

A conventional view of apprenticeship concludes that you must fill the cup of your student. Give them everything so they are complete in every way in the area that you lead. Often we feel inadequate to do this because we don't know everything so we never enter into the asking stage because we are working on our game....with me so far?

Ready for this? God does not call us to fill peoples cups.....

God calls us as leaders to Empty Our Cup. That means just give what we have and trust Him to find others to fill the rest of their cup. I know it seems like an incomplete process and at the same time it's encouraging that I only need to share what I know.....Pow! It makes the ask easier and at the same time gives energy and passion to your mission in the area that you lead because your leaving a legacy and the team is growing beyond yourself.

So Seek....Connect....Ask.....Empty......Repeat!

Whoop! We have a challenge at "The Ville" it's building relations within the assumption that church only lasts an hour on Sunday. Think about it, when you show up each week as a new person, don't know anyone..not so sure about church in a school...you name it. It takes a high degree of intentionality to connect with people...and lets define that a bit.... connect means more than a hello and a hand shake it means getting to really know someone so when you see them again you have something to talk about that matters. Last week in the cafe we Had that going on but I want to challenge you with a little math.

Average person shows up with 8 minutes to spare before the service starts and stays for about 10 minutes after. That's 18 minutes each week to build a relationship. Now if you were to have lunch or breakfast with them once the following week that would last for approx 90 minutes that's 4 and a half times the amount of time that they spend on a Sunday...just talking for a half hour following the service doubles and almost triples the time and makes a friend at the same time! It's exponential! Don't miss the opportunity to Hang it will impact in Big Ways in the long run!

Whoop! What comes to mind for us when we think of it is "having a conversation". However after talking with Joe Schulz NPCC Groups Director, he took Hangability to a Hole Nutha Level! Joe shared that making a connection is critical not just conversationally but creating connectivity. That means introducing people to each other. It's a critical Invisible when it comes to effective relationship building. So this weekend when your in the middle of a conversation remember to make a connection. Broaden the relational circle of everyone and watch the hangability increase!

You guys are the best!!!! Whoop! I believe it's an approach that we take sometimes to leading in the Church. That we can somehow just turn this whole Christian thing on every Sunday...almost a performance mentality, and I believe it's a very dangerous deal.

I think primarily because of two reasons. One because we have bought into a flip the switch philosophy when it comes to how we live outside of church and how we act inside of church. It messes with our ability to serve and lead well in our community.
(now hear me in this I understand the tension, being a Christ Follower doesn't mean we are "Happy Happy" all the time and truth be told sometimes we are in a battle with our thoughts and attitudes....were all human, I understand but know there is a gap and we will always battle it)

Secondly,we believe the lie that as Christians, Sunday is our day, the day we get our juice that carries us all week long.

Hmmmm...

Bottom line; there is a powerful connection between your Personal(spiritual) disciplines and your public influence.

It's not about being perfect but being healthy. Your daily spiritual disciplines are critical to keeping the switch on and leveraging Sundays as an opportunity to Worship God out of the overflow of your relationship with Him. Sunday's are about Giving our best to our God who has only ever given his best for you and for me!

In order to be effective in leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ we too must be growing in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Know this, You can't give what you don't have.....so......

What are you reading? Who are you meeting with? What are you praying for? Are you stepping outside your spiritual comfort zone and engaging in an accountability group where you can have some Rated R conversations about the real things that you are dealing with in your life?

I challenge you to ramp up your private disciplines, as we continue this launch and as we become more effective at impacting the community know that we will be challenged and attacked, all of it to get us to be playing with that switch so we will lose heart and quit.

We have an Amazing Team, Keep Growing.... Every week is chock full of uncertainty to manage....Two, Someone is coming!

In all of this...We Get To Do This!!! and at the same time We get to feel the Incredible Vibe of a Big God!

Even Cooler than that is watching "Someone" bump into that!

That's why we need to keep investing and inviting and NOT fall in the rut of showing up waiting!

Gods Big and He is there already! Often we find ourselves "Inspired and All In" when it comes to a vision that captures our hearts. What I know about me and what I know about you is we all tend to lean towards being over committed. The result isn't pretty and more often than not not only affects the organization and the team but more importantly your family.

Now I understand the paradox that the word no creates when we are all trying to "Change the World". We all feel we need to do more....we all need to lead better....and we all need to.....you fill in the blank.

With that all in mind lets look at two principles that are critical as we move ahead in Louisville.

The first principal is what I call "Know Who is Who's What".
In other words have a clear understanding of what is Mine and what is Gods. Sometimes I just have to go home, sometimes I have to just say no, sometimes I have to realize that this is God's and He is inviting me to help him and not the other way around.
When I have this one wrong...and at times I do....it all becomes about me. All this I have to do.....all this stuff.....indignant attitude when someone doesn't live up to my idea of something.
This I know... 90% of my dysfunctional church experience revolves around this one...either caused by me or by others, either way it ended bad.

Critical Question: Am I going to trust God to do His Part?

The second Principal is called "It IS all about Me".

Wait you just said.........Hold on, it's not what your thinking!

Self Leadership is critical during this time of our adventure in Louisville.
Self leadership is the ability to take the time, create the margin to connect with God,with yourself and your family. We all understand that we are sacrificing our own Sunday experience for the sake of those who need it in our community. This is a Butt-Kicking hard thing to do and you will lose your passion quickly if you don't have an outlet with God and your family. We will do everything we can to create community as a team but it can never replace your ability and responsibility to lead yourself and your family well.

The trap for this is found in a critical question: Where do you get your significance?

Often we run on fumes because the Juice we get isn't from God but from People, so we run to performance in order to get the juice for this week...we look for affirmation to the point where it becomes work or we freak out if something isn't perfect and it's one more thing that we do on a Sunday.

All of it takes us to a place we don't want to be!

We may not have it all or do it all, but we have enough and HE will do the rest!
We just need to be at the best place possible personally to lead well during one of the hardest seasons in Church Land.

BOTTOM LINE: there is a direct connection between our success in Louisville and your ability to lead yourself well.

I am committed to lead you all in that direction!

Whoop! Kev

Sunday Thoughts

Right now I am sitting in my office experiencing a number of feelings on a Monday and I’m sure you have experienced some over the last 24 hours as well. One Emotion that I’m feeling is that of Humility, it is a humbling experience to serve a God who Loves me the way he does, who knows everything about me and still loves me anyway…a God who pursues me and wants and has given ONLY HIS BEST FOR ME! It’s also humbling to lead and serve alongside an incredible group of people daring to lay it all on the line to make Jesus famous in Louisville. I was moved as I drove home yesterday thinking about this…What do you give back to a God who has only ever given His best for me?....Only My Best! Yesterday that happened!

There were no blemished lambs (see Malachi chapter 1) in Louisville middle school on Sunday! We all brought our A Game. We experienced everything that we could possibly experience in a first day of a run-through and I’m sure that we left with an understanding that this is going to take some work and I know that we are no less determined to “Make it Happen” in Louisville and introduce our friends and family not to a cool church but to a Savior who can change their lives forever just as he is changing your life right now as we go through this challenge spike together. I am humbled!

The Second Emotion was that of excitement!! I am pumped and as I looked at the first morning of a run-through…. I see the potential that awaits this campus, this team and this community. My friends in the church world tell me that we are way ahead of the curve. They say it often takes double digit months to accomplish all that we are attempting to do and they are amazed that we have attempted to do this at two locations at once, all to say that God is at work and has gone before us and will continue to show up! We Serve a Mighty God!

The Third Emotion is that of being overwhelmed. So Much Going on, so much to do, so many people to meet with and so many conversations and so much clarity need to be given and yet our team is all over it.

I remember I was meeting with a mentor some years ago and I was discouraged about the speed of something’s that were happening and I didn’t feel like Dwight was moving fast enough. My Mentor listened to my grumbling cleverly disguised as candor and asked me a question that forever altered my view of leadership and followership….
He said, “Kev, how long are you in it for?”
I asked, “what do you mean?”
He Said, a year…maybe two?” He said, “Kev how long do you think all of this is going to take?”
My Head was spinning and I replied, “ till the job is done!” and he followed with “and how long is that?”

“forever I guess?!” I said.

His reply was simple and straight forward………”So what’s the hurry?”

Our God is the God of perfect timing and more often than not it out of his concern for us and our growth and trust in him that he moves when he moves. He decides to use imperfect people to prove just how powerful he really is and he is doing that with all of us, so I rejoice in the overwhelmedness! I know that God is up to something right now In me and he is up to something in you because something happens when we are in over our heads. We fight for control when God wants us to surrender and we cry for peace when all he wants is for us to pray and our minds run like crazy when all we need to do is run to him.

Praise God for being overwhelmed!!!

TILL THE JOB IS DONE Kev

Managing Uncertainty

"Leadership is about uncertainty. Deal with it" -Andy Stanley

There is no doubt that we are dealing with uncertainty as the August 23rd trial launch draws closer and the public launch follows closely behind.I know for me that my heart is beating a little faster and my nights shorter as details are emerging and questions looming. That feeling in your stomach and that growing sense of wondering just how is this all going to work and is this going to work out......and you know what?

All of this totally PUMPS ME UP!

Seriously!, There is nothing like the thrill of Riding along with God and being a first hand witness to His Miracles and working and experiencing things in His Economy and ultimately His Plan. We are in store for an incredible ride but don't let uncertainty rob that from you. Sometimes we can get caught up in trying to create our miracles, work in our economy and process our plans and when that happens we can get lost on the ride. There is no doubt that things have to happen, get paid for and planned out and it is our job and my job to bring clarity. The next three weeks provide us with the opportunity for clarity on a lot of levels. It's going to be an amazing Ride and to quote Dwight "We are going to see God do some Amazing Stuff!"
So our challenge as Leaders is to manage uncertainty, so here's a few tips.
Pray Often! Remember that God is up to something in your life as well so Pray Pray Pray!
Choose Trust. Sometimes things can happen that create an opportunity go someplace "not good", fight the power and choose trust.
Ask Questions. Call me, Text me, Twitter me, Facebook me (dang that sounds like a song)..anyway, ask me and I will tell you everything I know and if I don't I will track it down.
Have Fun. I call it RTF. Remember The Fun!

Hey I want you guys to know that you all are the Best! Hang on tight, this is going to be a great ride!!! Whoop! Whoop!

Attached below is a list of GO 09 signees and where the preliminary assignments have been made based on verbal feedback. Currently, there are 3 projects that have been identified and they are as follows:

1. Cookie delivery to safety service personnel - roughly 1 dozen to the following locations
Louisville Police Department
Louisville Fire Department
Nimishillen Fire Department - Broadway Avenue Station
Stark County Sheriff Department
Stark County Corrections

If you would like to be included in this list and you are not listed below, please contact Terry Kodrin (330) 453-7193 (Home) to confirm. We need to have a number in order to adequately determine how many places and qty of cookies can be delivered. The Cookie Champions will meet at our home (1446 Chesapeake Ave - Louisville) no later than 9:00 for final count, staging, and delivery. We may add some more places or increase/decrease the number of cookies per stop. We would like to have each participant bring 2 dozen cookies each.

2. Louisville Elementary School - Playground cleanup - Nickel Plate Road.
Again, please check to see if you have been assigned to this project - if not contact Sly Kodrin at (330) 453-7193 (Home) to confirm. We are still awaiting final instructions as the cleanup will involve cleaning up and removing some old railroad ties. I have attached some pictures for your review. I am hoping that the final Go Ahead comes through no later than tomorrow evening so that final preparations can be made. We are having difficulty getting final OK and directions from the principal.

If it is a go - we will meet at the school at 9:00 - The school is on Nickel Plate Road just north of state rt 153 - 2nd traffic light east of route 44 in beautiful downtown Louisville.

3. Louisville Middle School - Flower Bed cleanup - No one has yet commited to this as we believe that this can be accomplished very quickly with very few people. There is no doubt that making it personal is an Essential element as we launch out into Stark County, it's the glue that will keep us busting through quitting points and working through the personal spiritual growth that's required as we try to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
When you think about it, making it and keeping it personal has always been apart of the vision at NPCC. A story is the fuel that keeps the focus where it needs to be.....On reaching people. These are exciting days as we get closer the launch in September and keep in the front of your mind that God is working in you and through you to reach People in the Louisville area.

Be encouraged and know that,"God is going to do some Amazing Stuff!"

WHOOP!
